Redwood County was created on November 4, 1862 (Organized in 1865) from Brown County. The County Seat is Redwood Falls. The County was named for Redwood River. Redwood is the translation of the Dakota name "Chanshayapi".
Counties adjacent to Redwood County are Renville County (northeast), Brown County (east), Cottonwood County (south), Murray County (southwest), Lyon County (west), Yellow Medicine County (northwest). Cities and Towns Include Belview, Clements, Delhi, Gilfillan, Lamberton, Lucan, Milroy, Morgan, Redwood Falls, Revere, Sanborn, Seaforth, Vesta, Wabasso, Walnut Grove, Wanda. Townships Include Brookville, Charlestown, Delhi, Gales, Granite Rock, Honner, Johnsonville, Kintire, Lamberton, Morgan, New Avon, North Hero, Paxton, Redwood Falls, Sheridan, Sherman, Springdale, Sundown, Swedes Forest, Three Lakes, Underwood, Vail, Vesta, Waterbury, Westline, Willow Lake Townships. Redwood County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1864, Marriage Records from 1865, Death Records from 1869 and Land Records from 1865.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Redwood County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1867 and has Court Records from 1868.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Redwood County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Redwood County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.

County Courthouse
In June of 1866, one year after Redwood County was organized, the first court was convened by Judge Horace Austin in a hall belonging to J. Schmall. The following, year, court was held over Louis Robert's store, and court business included a grand jury hearing on the New Ulm Christmas murders. The clerk of court used his home as his office during the hearings and for years unsuccessfully tried to collect rent for doing so.
In 1870, two citizens offered to build a courthouse if they could be guaranteed two years' rent at $5 per month. County commissioners agreed, but by 1872 the building was inadequate. At this time, Sam McPhail deeded the courthouse square to the county. A. Dolvin built a building for $2,150 on the southwest corner the next year. In 1878, a $500 vault was added.
In 1890, the county commissioners learned that they would be reimbursed $10,000 by the state for expenses of certain murder trials. The money would be added to $5,000 set aside by the county to built a replacement courthouse in 1892.
E.P. Bassford of St. Paul designed the building and William Lettau built it at a cost of $35,000. Granite came from a quarry in north Redwood and the bricks came from a New Ulm brickyard. The courtroom occupied the entire second floor of the Romanesque Revival style building. At that time, live trials and hearings were a major spectator sport.
The building has since been remodeled and expanded. An oil burner replaced the coal stoker furnace in 1962, which in turn was replaced by a hot water system in 1972. Windows have been filled in with glass block and aluminum frames, towers removed one-by one, entrances changed, a vault and a 19,500-square-foot south wing added, and wiring, telephones, and airconditioning modernized.
