Nicollet County was created on March 5, 1853 from Dakota County. The County Seat is St. Peter. The County was named for Joseph Nicollet, geographer and explorer, who led expedition to Minnesota and parts of North and South Dakota.
Counties adjacent to Nicollet County are Sibley County (north), Le Sueur County (east), Blue Earth County (southeast), Brown County (southwest), Renville County (northwest). Cities and Towns Include Courtland, Lafayette, Mankato, Nicollet, North Mankato, St. Peter. Townships Include Belgrade, Bernadotte, Brighton, Courtland, Granby, Lafayette, Lake Prairie, New Sweden, Nicollet, Oshawa, Ridgely, Traverse, West Newton Townships. Nicollet County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1852, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1853.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Nicollet County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1862 and has Court Records from 1850.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Nicollet County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Nicollet County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.
Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,
Nicollet County, named in honor of Joseph N. Nicollet, a French explorer, lies in south central Minnesota and closely resembles an isosceles triangle with 104.6 miles of Minnesota River front. Within the 280,866.22 total acres in the County, almost 245,000 acres is farmland with 24,000 acres of forest land and 12,000 acres of wetland. The County is composed of 5 cities and 13 townships.
In order to establish the County, the Territorial Governor appointed the following Nicollet County officers: Register of Deeds, County Treasurer, Sheriff, and three County Commissioners. The first Board meeting was held on June 27, 1853 at the hall in Traverse de Sioux.
The first county election was held on October 11, 1853 to fill the following offices: three County Commissioners, Sheriff, Register of Deeds, County Treasurer, two Constables, three Assessors, Judge of Probate, District Attorney, and Court Surveyor.
The County Commissioners originally established nine townships in Nicollet County. Several years later, four more townships were created.
The state capitol was nearly moved to St. Peter from St. Paul. However, Joseph Rollette absconded with the bill that would make St. Peter the state capitol, and returned to St. Paul 123 as the gavel sounded the end of the legislative session.
In 1856, a petition was submitted to move the County Courthouse from Traverse des Sioux to St. Peter. The petition was thrown out because some names were duplicates, some were non-residents, and some were deceased persons, along with other various reasons. In 1858, the petition was resubmitted and passed by a vote of 457 to 301, and the Courthouse was built in St. Peter.
Construction of the present Courthouse was started in 1880 and completed the following year. An addition to the Courthouse was built in 1976. Following damage from a tornado in March of 1998, a remodeling and addition project took place in 1999/2000.
By 1859, there were 15 school districts in Nicollet County, and the first railroad came St. Peter in 1868.
County Courthouse
The first courthouse at St. Peter in Nicollet County was built by the St. Peter Company as a temporary building, to be replaced by what citizens believed would be the state capitol building of Minnesota. When this "sure thing" didn't happen, the Company initiated in 1859 the election that moved the county seat from Traverse des Sioux to St. Peter. The $5,000, two-story, frame building at Minnesota and Broad became the county courthouse. The old frame courthouse was St. Peter's city hall until 1886, when it burned to the ground.
The current courthouse was designed by Edward P. Bassford and E.W. Stebbins of St. Paul. It cost $26,638 and was completed in 1881 by Bohn & Wilce of Winona on three lots donated by St. Peter citizens. The building has a strong Italianate style, as well as elements of the Romanesque Revival style. Decoration in the light stone trim includes the Latin word for "law" -- LEX -- over the doorway.
The courthouse was extended in 1917. A pagoda-like, mansard-roofed addition was built to protect the front entrance in 1967. A three-story addition built across the back of the block in 1978 blends the old with the new. It was designed by Wick-Kagermeier-Skaar of Mankato and is made of brick and limestone with two-story arched window openings. The building cost $913,512. As space became available in the new building, $200,000 was spent to renovate and refurbish the original building.
On March 28, 1998, a tornado damaged the 1880s building, destroyed the steeple, and lifted the John A. Johnson statue from its base. A new steeple was built in November of that year.
The Minnesota Historical Society contributed $288,148 toward restoration of the building's window woodwork, front steps, and front entry and the building reopened in June 2000. In March 2001, a three-year construction project began that remodeled the building and added 35,000 square feet to it at a cost of $10.5 million. The project was funded through insurance, state and federal funding, and new bonding. In may of that year, the courthouse was officially renamed the Nicollet County Government Center.
