Mower County was created on February 20, 1855 (Organized in 1856) from Rice County. The County Seat is Austin. The County was named for John E. Mower, member of the council in the territorial legislature, 1854-55; state representative, 1874-75.
Counties adjacent to Mower County are Dodge County (north), Olmsted County (northeast), Fillmore County (east), Howard County, Iowa (southeast), Mitchell County, Iowa (south), Worth County, Iowa (southwest), Freeborn County (west). Cities and Towns Include Adams, Austin (the county seat), Brownsdale, Dexter, Elkton, Grand Meadow, Le Roy, Lyle, Mapleview, Racine, Rose Creek, Sargeant, Taopi, Waltham. Mower County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1870, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1856.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Mower County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1877 and has Court Records from 1858.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Mower County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Mower County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.

County Courthouse
The first courthouse to be built in Austin was completed in 1868, 11 years after Austin became the county seat of Mower County. The building cost $6,450.
Eleven years later, the village of Ramsey made an unsuccessful attempt to secure the county seat. This may have led to the next Mower County Courthouse, built in Austin in 1884. The building, shown above in 1914, was three stories of red brick built over a high limestone basement in the Italianate style. A turreted Roman Renaissance and narrow dome rose above the central pavilion, whose one-story columned portico was approached by a grand flight of stairs. The building cost $64,817.
Additions in 1952 and 1966 eventually became the courthouse and the old building was demolished. The additions are flat, rectangular, two-story buildings made of pink Kasota limestone and gray Bedford stone from Indiana. The first section, 59 by 121 feet, has deep horizontal bands of windows on a long facade along the east side of the block. The 1966 section, with square windows randomly placed, is slightly larger and is perpendicular to the first with its narrow end to the east. A glass-fronted lobby, which acts as a connecting concourse, was recessed between.
In 1975, a one-story, city-county law enforcement center was added directly behind the width of this lobby. A remodeling project and addition, completed in the late 1990s, added courtroom, court administration, and law enforcement office space and changed the look of the main entrance.
