McLeod County was created on March 1, 1856 from Carver and Sibley Counties. The County Seat is Glencoe. The County was named for Martin McLeod, pioneer fur trader, member of the council in the territorial legislature, 1849-53; one of the founders of the City of Glencoe, 1855.
Counties adjacent to McLeod County are Wright County (northeast), Carver County (east), Sibley County (south), Renville County (west), Meeker County (northwest). Cities and Towns Include Biscay, Brownton, Glencoe, Hutchinson, Lester Prairie, Plato, Silver Lake, Stewart, Winsted. Townships Include Acoma, Bergen, Collins, Glencoe, Hale, Hassan Valley, Helen, Hutchinson, Lynn, Penn, Rich Valley, Round Grove, Sumter, Winsted Townships. McLeod County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1865, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1856.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
McLeod County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1864 and has Court Records from 1867.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in McLeod County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the McLeod County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.
Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,

County Courthouse
The county's first court session was held in a log school house shortly after the county's organization in 1856. Years later, the village of Glencoe contributed $2,000 to the county to build the 1876 courthouse that forms the core of the present building. Between 1876 and 1982, the county added to, expanded, and remodeled the original $10,397 building six times, at a cost of about $3.5 million. The above photograph shows the courthouse in 1959.
The impression of the building from the front is of a 1909 vintage, brick Beaux Arts building with a brick box joined to it by a recessed two-story glass section. W.F. Kinney of Stebbins, Kinney and Halden, designed the 1909 classic columned renovation and Emil M. Jacobson was the builder.
The 1958 windowless addition was by Hammel & Green of St. Paul and is compatible in proportion to the original building though completely contemporary.
