Lyon County was created on November 2, 1869 (Organized in 1870, Deorganized in 1873 the Reorganized in 1875) from Redwood County. The County Seat is Marshall. The County was named for General Nathaniel Lyon who worked against secession in Missouri; served in frontier duty with Army in Minnesota and Dakota territory, 1853-61; killed in Civil War at battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, 1861.

Lyon County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1874, Marriage Records from 1871, Death Records from 1874 and Land Records from 1870.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Lyon County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1890 and has Court Records from 1875.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Lyon County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Lyon County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.

County Courthouse
Kiel's Hotel in Lynd is called Lyon County's first courthouse because, starting in 1873, county business was conducted there for nearly a year.
Marshall became the county seat in 1873 and the first county commissioners meeting was held there the following January. A small frame courthouse was built in 1876 for $450. A brick building, similar to the one that stands today, burned the week before it was to be dedicated in 1891. Apparently well-insured, the county built the courthouse that makes up the central section of the present complex as a replacement in 1892.
The courthouse was built in the Victorian Romanesque style. While the original square romantic tower and its clock have been removed from the east end, the early courtroom remains on the second floor as part of the county museum. The gabled hip roof of the early building rises well above the flat roofs of additions added on the west and east in 1939 and 1975. The bulge of the roof's remaining cropped-off tower on the center front is repeated on the east as silo-like projections.
Light limestone frames the windows and marks the coping or water table of the building. The courtrooms are designed and furnished to reflect the curves that are prominent on the outside of the building.
