Jackson County was created on May 23, 1857 (Organized in 1866) from Brown County. The County Seat is Jackson. The County was named for Henry Jackson, the first merchant in St. Paul and a member of the first territorial legislature.
Counties adjacent to Jackson County are Cottonwood County (north), Watonwan County (northeast), Martin County (east), Emmet County, Iowa (southeast), Dickinson County, Iowa (south), Osceola County, Iowa (southwest), Nobles County (west). Cities and Towns Include Alpha, Heron Lake, Jackson, Lakefield, Okabena, Wilder. Townships Include Alba, Belmont, Christiania, Delafield, Des Moines, Enterprise, Ewington, Heron Lake, Hunter, Kimball, La Crosse, Middletown, Minneota, Petersburg, Rost, Round Lake, Sioux Valley, Weimer, West Heron Lake, Wisconsin Townships. Jackson County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1868, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1866.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Jackson County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1867 and has Court Records from 1871.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Jackson County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Jackson County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.
Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,

County Courthouse
In 1871, a $10,000 bond issue to build the Jackson County Courthouse failed, but a $6,000 issue succeeded the following year. T.L. Twilford of Spirit Lake, IA, received a contract to build the two-story brick and stone, Italianate style courthouse. The building, which had a central pedimented pavilion and square cupola, was completed in 1873. It was demolished 34 years later to make way for the current courthouse.
Over the years, Lakefield wanted to become the county seat. However, Lakefield's later attempts in 1900 and 1906 did not come to a vote. Instead, county commissioners passed a resolution in 1906 saying that a courthouse should be built in Jackson.
In 1909, Buechner and Orth Architects of Minneapolis and contractor Charles Skooglun of St. Paul built the Bedford limestone Beaux Arts building. It measured 80 by 120 feet and cost $117,435. The high, segmented dome topped by a cast-metal statue of Justice, the monumental columns, the pediment, and the symmetrical pavilions reflect the classicism of civic buildings at that time.
A central octagonal atrium provides the main circulation space inside. The two stories of the dome and the second floor courtroom are decorated with murals that depict toga-clad figures engaged in construction and engineering, a railroad, and a sod buster's cabin. Liberty, Equality, and Justice in the form of three women guard the judges' bench and 14 other figures appear in a band around the top of the courtroom. Many of the murals' artists were recent immigrants who painted free-hand using camel hair brushes. The murals were cleaned and restored in 1975. Other decorations include stained glass at the top of the dome, marbleized plaster walls, and terrazzo floors.
