Houston County was created on April 4, 1854 from Fillmore County. The County Seat is Caledonia. The County was named for Samuel Houston, member of Congress from Tennessee, 1823-27; governor of Tennessee, 1827-29; president of Texas, 1836-38, 1841-44; U. S. Senator from Texas, 1845-59; governor of Texas, 1859-61.
Counties adjacent to Houston County are Winona County (north), La Crosse County, Wisconsin (northeast), Vernon County, Wisconsin (east), Allamakee County, Iowa (south), Winneshiek County, Iowa (southwest), Fillmore County (west). Cities and Towns Include Brownsville, Caledonia, Eitzen, Hokah, Houston, La Crescent, Spring Grove. Townships Include Black Hammer, Brownsville, Caledonia, Crooked Creek, Hokah, Houston, Jefferson, La Crescent, Mayville, Money Creek, Mound Prairie, Sheldon, Spring Grove, Union, Wilmington, Winnebago, Yucatan Townships. Houston County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1854, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1856.
The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.
Houston County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1867 and has Court Records from 1857.
The Court Administrator's Office maintains court files for Civil, Criminal, Traffic, Probate, Conciliation, Juvenile, Tax and Family Court matters.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Houston County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Houston County Tombstone Transcription Project.
The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.
Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.

County Courthouse
Amid 1855 controversy about where the Houston County seat should be located, the county board's three members moved the official records overnight to Caledonia and kept them in the cabin of Commissioner Samuel McPhail. First court hearings were held there.
A one-story courthouse and jail was built in Caledonia in 1857. In spite of continued turmoil over the county seat, a two-story building was built in Caledonia in 1867 at a cost of $2,000 and the 1857 facility became the sheriff's residence. After several more votes, Caledonia prevailed as the county seat in 1874 and Houston County immediately started construction of the jail and sheriff's residence.
In 1882, it became apparent that a new courthouse was needed, causing yet another county seat disagreement. Caledonia again won the vote, however.
The current Houston County Courthouse, pictured above, was designed by Maybury and Sons of Winona and built by Noonan and Stellwager at a cost of $60,000. County taxes doubled as a result. The courthouse was completed in 1885. Five chandeliers and ornamental woodworking for the judges' courtroom cost $800 alone. Such costs were criticized as "unwarranted" by local citizens.
In 1965-66, an annex was added by Nelson Construction Co. of Caledonia at a cost of $41,140. In 1977, another larger addition was built to house county offices. Kratt, Meyer and Lachecki of LaCrosse built the limestone addition to match the Romanesque style courthouse. Following the $514,548 addition, the existing courthouse was remodeled at a cost of $274,992. The courtroom was moved to the opposite side of the building along with the original oak rail, judge's bench, clerk's desk, and jury box. Unused chimneys were also removed.
