Watonwan County Facts

Watonwan County was created on November 6, 1860 (Organized in 1871) from Brown County. The County Seat is St. James. The County was named for the Watonwan River. Translation of the Dakota word watanwan meaning "where fish bait bounds".

Counties adjacent to Watonwan County are Brown County (north), Blue Earth County (east), Martin County (south), Jackson County (southwest), Cottonwood County (west). NOTE: The record dates below are from the earliest date to present time. At some time Watonwan County was attached to Blue Earth County for county and or judicial purposes. Watonwan County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1867, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1859.

The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.

Watonwan County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1890 and has Court Records from 1885.

Minnesota Department of Health, Attention: Office of the State Registrar, P.O. Box 64882, St. Paul, MN 55164. It is no longer necessary to go to the registrar's office of the county where the birth or death took place. You may go to a registrar's office in any county in Minnesota for births that took place during of after 1900 and for deaths that took place during or after 1997. They have the following records:

Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,

County Courthouse

The first courthouse in the county was located in Madelia. The frame building was destroyed by fire and Madelia citizens immediately replaced it with a brick building to avoid losing the county seat to St. James. Still, St. James petitioned for a vote on the issue and eventually won the seat.

In 1896, a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style courthouse was completed in St. James at a cost of $33,000. Otto Kleinschmidt of Mankato, the contractor, laid the floor tiles himself on Sundays to finish the building within his estimate.

The two-story courthouse's asymmetric features, towers, the roof, and pavilions balance it well. It is built with smooth light-brown brick and Indiana limestone trim. Marble pillars at the front entrance support three arches of limestone. The original building included a pillared tower rising to an imposing height. However, its huge beams and heavy plank flooring were open to the weather and eventually the tower was closed and lowered.

Offices on both floors of the courthouse were heated by fireplaces, faced with handmade ceramic tile. The second floor was occupied entirely by the district court. The large courtroom had a recessed dome, from which hung an elaborate brass chandelier. The interior retains its original tall windows and high ceilings, though the panes on the first floor have been reduced to the size of the combination window fittings. The hallway floors are of rust and white polished tile, and oak woodwork remains throughout the building. The names of citizens in military service are painted directly on the white walls of the hall in measured ranks bordered by red and blue.

The building was remodeled in 1950 and was added on to in 1972 and 1981.
