Saint Louis County was created on March 1, 1856 (Organized in 1857) from Itasca and Newton Counties. The County Seat is Duluth. The County was named for St. Louis River. The St. Louis River was named by the French explorer Verendrye in honor of being awarded the order of St. Louis by the King of France in 1749.

Saint Louis County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1870, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 18?.

The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.

Birth, marriage, and death records are connected with central life events. They are prime sources for genealogical information.

Minnesota Department of Health, Attention: Office of the State Registrar, P.O. Box 64882, St. Paul, MN 55164. It is no longer necessary to go to the registrar's office of the county where the birth or death took place. You may go to a registrar's office in any county in Minnesota for births that took place during of after 1900 and for deaths that took place during or after 1997. They have the following records:

  • Birth Certificates: Avalible since 1900 to 3 months ago.
    • Cost: $16.00 for Certified and $13.00 for Non-Certified Certificates. For births that took place before 1900, go to the local registrar office in the county where the birth took place.
    • Processing Time: Filled requests take 4-6 weeks when ordered by mail (Application for Certified and Non-certified) or 2-5 Days when you order online.
  • Death Certificates: Avalible since Jan 1908.
    • Cost: $13.00 for Certified and Non-Certified Certificates. For deaths that took place before 1900, go to the local registrar office in the county where the death took place.
    • Processing Time: Filled requests take 4-6 weeks when ordered by mail (Application for Certified and Non-certified) or 2-5 Days when you order online.
  • Marriage Certificates: Certified copies may be available from the Local Registrar in the county where the license was issued or you can order them online.
  • Divorces: Certified copies may be available from the Local Registrar in the county where the divorce was granted.

Obituaries can vary in the amount of information they contain, but many of them are genealogical goldmines, including information such as names, dates, places of birth and death, marriage information, and family relationships.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Saint Louis County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Saint Louis County Tombstone Transcription Project.

The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.

Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. A considerable number have been printed in the Minnesota State Genealogical Society Newsletter. Some have been privately published.

Minnesota County History Name Index: This database is a name index of eleven county histories and plat books for the area immediately south of the city of St. Paul in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Researchers will find the name of the county resident, the book in which the person's name appears, and the page number. Where information is available, town of residence is also given.
Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,

County Courthouse

When Duluth became the St. Louis County seat in 1862, rented space was used as a courthouse. A formal courthouse was completed in 1884.

The current courthouse was built in 1909 and is the central presence in a civic center where it is surrounded by the federal building and the city hall. The design for the square and the courthouse itself came from the office of internationally famous architect Daniel H. Burnham, who had been the moving force of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. That "White City" was largely responsible for the revival of the classic style in architecture for the next 30 years.

The ground floor of the Duluth courthouse is built of strongly coursed stone, with a mezzanine above and Ionic columns rising three floors to a heavy entablature. Inscribed on it is, "The Peoples Laws Define Usages, Ordain Rights and Duties, Secure Public Safety, Defend Liberty, Teach Reverence and Obedience, and Establish Justice." 

The building cost $992,500 and was built by Lanquist and Illsley Co. of Chicago. J.J. Wangenstein was the local associate architect and P.A. Karns was the superintendent of construction.

Facing the courthouse is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, designed by Cass Gilbert in about 1921, with sculptures by Paul Bartless. A fountain and mall completed the square in the 1960s.

St. Louis County has two other courthouses within its limits because of its size. Courthouses are also located in Hibbing and Virginia.

Hibbing's courthouse is one of three courthouses in St. Louis County. The 1954 courthouse has a contemporary design with Indiana limestone on the exterior and red marble on the massive interior wall between the courtrooms. The long hallway connecting the two ends of the building takes advantage of natural light transmitted through unique domes spaced along its length. The south end of the courthouse is adorned with long columns that seem to glow at night when they are lit.

The two-story building was designed by Jyring and Jurenes of Hibbing and built for $840,000. A glass panel extends through the entire height at one end of the long face of the building. A one-story office corridor connects this with another two-story section of the building.

It replaces the 1916 courthouse, which was similar to the St. Louis County Courthouses in Duluth and Virginia. It was demolished when the entire town of North Hibbing moved south in response to expanding open-pit iron mining operations.

The courthouse in Virginia is one of three courthouses that serve St. Louis County residents. It was built in 1910 from plans by Bray and Nystrom of Duluth. The Beaux Arts style building has a two-story classical portico with four sets of ornate double columns that set off the three-bay pavilion. The two end bays have simple single windows above a high basement story. A balustrade crowns the roofline above the cornice, quoins define corners, and carved swags and garlands decorate spandrels and window tops. Light standards with white globes guard the front steps.

The courthouse doubled its size with an addition in 1921 and was extensively remodeled in the 1980s.
