Douglas County Facts

Douglas County was created on March 8, 1858 from Cass and Pembina Counties. The County Seat is Alexandria. The County was named for Stephen Arnold Douglas, member of Congress from Illinois 1843-47, U.S. Senator from Illinois, 1847-61; candidate for president in 1860; advocated Minnesota statehood as chairman of Senate Committee on Territories.

Douglas County Recorder's Office has Birth Records from 1870, Marriage Records from 1870, Death Records from 1870 and Land Records from 1862.

The Recorders Office is responsible for all the real estate records for properties located in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate records are recorded/filed in this office. As Local Registrar, the office protects and issues certified copies of Birth and Death records, Marriage Certificates & Military Discharge Records.

Douglas County Court Administrator's Office has Probate Records from 1868 and has Court Records from 1868.

Minnesota Department of Health, Attention: Office of the State Registrar, P.O. Box 64882, St. Paul, MN 55164. It is no longer necessary to go to the registrar's office of the county where the birth or death took place. You may go to a registrar's office in any county in Minnesota for births that took place during of after 1900 and for deaths that took place during or after 1997. They have the following records:

Obituaries can vary in the amount of information they contain, but many of them are genealogical goldmines, including information such as names, dates, places of birth and death, marriage information, and family relationships.

There are many churches and cemeteries in Douglas County. Some transcriptions are online. A great site is the Douglas County Tombstone Transcription Project.

The Minnesota Historical Records Survey Project of Madison published the Directory of Churches and Religious Organizations in Minnesota in 1941 and Guide to Church Vital Statistics Records in Minnesota in 1942. There are also numerous publications by the project for specific denominations. Extensive microfilm collections of church records in Minnesota are available through the FHL. The State Historical Society of Minnesota and Area Research Centers have a variety of church records including microfilm and original records.

Numerous cemeteries have been read and transcribed by local genealogical societies in Minnesota. The transcriptions are frequently deposited with an Area Research Center, a local library, or the State Historical Society of Minnesota. Minnesota Crew Lists, 1929-1952: For several decades in the early half of the twentieth century, Two Harbors, Minnesota was one of the busiest iron ore loading ports in the world. This database is an index to the crew lists (NOT passenger lists) of vessels that arrived at Two Harbors,

County Courthouse

After Douglas County was formally organized in 1866, court was held for several years in a small frame building on Main Street occupied by the Alexandria Post. The present courthouse square was donated by the widow of William E. Hicks, an Alexandria developer. Ms. Hicks made the donation in 1875 on condition that a courthouse costing not less than $3,500 be built upon it before January, 1878. County commissioners accepted the conditions and approved a bid of $3,447 by Raymond & Owen of St. Cloud to build a two-story frame courthouse.

A fund started in the 1880s by a county auditor allowed the 1895 completion of the towered brick courthouse without the need for issuing bonds. Because "the county was suffering from a serious industrial depression, cost of material and labor was at a low figure...for this reason Douglas County was able to erect her present handsome courthouse...for the sum of $35,000."  The oak woodwork and tiled floors attest to the era of frugality.
